Course Outline
Introduction to Computers and Keyboarding: This course will provide students with the ability to understand the basic components of the computer, how the operating system works, tips and techniques to search and locate information on the internet. In addition, students will learn proper keyboarding techniques to improve their speed and accuracy.
MS Word: The course allows students to familiarize themselves with the latest MS Word software through guided instruction, interactive simulations and hands-on experience.
MS Excel: In this course students will gain basic skills needed for creating and editing basic working sheets for a variety of purposes and situations. Students will learn how to manage and audit numerical reports, analyze data, organize and calculate business information, prepare inventory reports, budgets, invoices and charts.
MS PowerPoint: MS PowerPoint teaches students how to create and manage presentations using a variety of core and intermediate features.
MS Outlook: This course teaches students how MS Outlook is structured, and how to use the various modules to coordinate communications and collaborations with others. Modules covered in this courseware include Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes. Also included are some features commonly used for collaboration purposes such as creating distribution lists or groups, cleaning up your system, marking junk mail, and how to check the size of your Outlook data file.
Effective Business Writing: The focus of this course is written communication as it is used in the business world. The course will deal with the theory of business communication while at the same time providing practical examples and assignments to improve the effectiveness of written communication skills.
Oral Communication & Presentation Skills: The main objective of this course is to enable students to understand, improve and develop their oral communication skills within a business context. Students prepare for a variety of business presentations encountered in the workplace.
Foundations of Business: The course is designed to introduce the principles of business within a modern Canadian environment. Students will explore the major theories of management and critically examine the various management functions, including planning, organizing, human resource management, leading and controlling.
Introduction to Management Skills: This course will provide an introduction to the concepts of effective management in organizational settings. It will cover a broad range of topics including the organizational processes associated with the function of management – planning, organizing, leading and controlling. However, it will also go further to consider the relationship between an individual and an organization, and between the organization and the society in which it operates. It will highlight the need for these relationships to be beneficial to all.
Introduction to Marketing Management: The course is designed to introduce marketing to students. Beginning with the analysis of consumer behaviour, there is a detailed description of all the elements of the marketing mix and the tools used to minimize risks in decision making.
Human Resource Management: The course is designed to introduce students to the theories and practices of Human Resource Management (HRM) that play a major role in ensuring that an organization prospers successfully. The strategic role and importance of human resources management is explored with emphasis on employment law, job design, planning, recruitment and selection.
Organizational Behaviour: The interaction between the individual and the group is at the basis of collective behaviour. The aim of the course is to develop students ability to master a freedom of the mind that will allow them to work in multiple reference systems, including their own.
Leadership Development: This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of management and leadership styles and an opportunity to understand and develop a personal leadership style.
E-Business: This course provides an insight into E-business in today’s businesses. It will examine the ways in which E-business differs from conventional business by exploring models and types of e-business and practical examples. Emphasis is placed on the growing importance of E-business, and understanding why it is constantly reshaping the way businesses operate. Students also gain an understanding of its importance within the economy as a whole, as well as those factors that influence its development.
Social Media Marketing: This course explores social media marketing tools, techniques, and strategies and examines the best ways to use them to build valuable, lasting relationships with customers. Students will learn how to use social media to interact and engage with potential customers, to improve online campaign performance, and how to integrate social media with other components of marketing in an overall marketing plan.
Business Mathematics: This course is designed to develop your ability to perform mathematical operations and to involve you in the application of mathematical techniques to a wide range of business problems.
Economics: This course focuses on microeconomics and its applications to business decisions. It deals with supply and demand, costs, competition, market structure and pricing, firm organization, resource markets and income distribution.
Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting I: Students will analyze and record business transactions using the rules of double-entry bookkeeping. In addition, students will learn how to prepare adjusting journal entries and prepare basic financial statements.
Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting II: Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting level 2 builds on the Level 1 foundation and includes the following areas: Using Special Journals and subsidiary ledgers, recording entries for merchandise companies, Assigning costs to Inventory LIFO, FIFO, Moving Weighted Average, Specific Identification Petty Cash and Bank Reconciliations, and payroll accounting.
Sage 50 Accounting: This course provides a practical introduction to Sage 50 Accounting. Students learn how to set up a computerized accounting environment and record transactions in the General, Payable, and Receivable ledgers by working with a variety of business simulations.
Business Finance: Finance involves understanding and making good financial decisions at all organizational levels. This course gives the student an introduction to the basic financial topics.
Using Business Information Systems: Business professionals use information technology to improve their decision making, their ability to collaborate professionally with others, enhance personal and enterprise productivity, and support innovation to add value. Students will explore the kinds of decisions that are critical to business and the information these decisions require. They investigate the components of information systems and how they are organized in a business to support efficient and effective decision- making.
Strategic Management: Strategic management is a process that establishes a framework for developing and sustaining competitive advantage. Managing strategically anticipates future events and results in the business vision. Strategic management is a dynamic process that involves key decision makers in all phases and all areas of the organization’s activities.
Business Plan: This course is focused on helping the student understand all the necessary steps to successfully create a new venture including, among many others, the business idea, opportunity analysis, the business plan formulation, and how to finance. There is a capstone project allowing the student’s drawing from previous courses.
Career and Employment Strategies: Students learn how to search for a job, uncover the hidden job market and identify employment opportunities, as well as how to prepare an effective resume and use social media tools.
Practicum Placement: The placement is to expose the student to a working environment where theory is put into practice. This course requires full-time attendance working within a business office environment.
